Update from the Superintendent
The second wave of the Covid-19 virus is proving to be a major challenge for the state, our county, and your school district. Positive cases are high, positivity rates are far above CDC guidelines, and area hospitals are filling up rapidly. We have tried our best to keep our students and staff as safe as possible, and this requires making adjustments to reflect current conditions.
Last week, three employees at McMonagle Elementary School tested positive for the virus, resulting in the isolation and quarantining of 15 employees. In reaction, your board of education voted Wednesday to not only continue in a fully virtual mode, but also to have our teaching staff work remotely as well. Hopefully, this will not result in any major changes in the delivery of instruction to the students, and it allows us the opportunity to keep our staff as safe as possible during the holiday season.
In addition, we have postponed our winter sports seasons until January so as not to put these student athletes at risk. As expected, last night the MHSAA called a statewide halt to fall playoffs and winter practices. In addition, many area districtsare now switching to fully remote learning.
We will continue our food distribution program, with pick-ups available on Tuesday and Wednesday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. We will also have a Holiday Gift Box giveaway on November19 at 4:00 at McMonagle and a Holiday drive through party at McMonagle on December 17 with gifts, food and a chance for the staff to deliver some holiday cheer.
The district will be reviewing these plans in December and will adjust our policies based upon the conditions at that time. In the meantime, please keep your friends and family safe, and help to spread joy this holiday season.
Sincerely,
Peter Toal
