Educational Information for Parents with Students Experiencing Homelessness

If you or your family lives in any of the following situations:

  • In a shelter
  • Motel, trailer park, or campground
  • Cars, parks, or other public places
  • Doubled up with family or friends due to economic hardship, home foreclosure, or a similar reason

Your child(ren) may be eligible for certain educational rights or protections under the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Students Assistance Act.

Students have the right to:

  • Immediate enrollment; even if lacking normally required documentation such as immunization records, birth certificate, etc.
  • Remain in their school of origin, defined as the school or district last enrolled in or attended when permanently housed
  • Transportation assistance to and from the school of origin
  • Full participation in school programs and other extra-curricular activities
  • Receive educational services comparable to those of other students, according to individual need

If you move, you should do the following:

  • Contact the school district’s local liaison for homeless education for help in enrolling your child in a new school or arranging continued enrollment in the school of origin.
