Update from the Superintendent
We are dealing with an unprecedented period time in our country and in our local community. We are still awaiting guidance from the state on school re-opening in the fall, so I cannot state definitively what that will look like, but I can tell you what our intent is regarding the safety and education of our students. Our goal is to provide an option to fit any family's situation. We will be calling all of our families later this summer to determine what type of learning environment best suits your needs. Please be sure that we have your latest contact information.

Traditional Classroom Learning
Our hope is that we are well past the most threatening period of the Covid-19 Virus, and that any family who wants to send their student to school this fall will be able to do so. We will take extra precautions and sanitizing steps, but we do not want to turn our schools into a prison-like environment. The concept of social distancing for a young person is not easy for them to practice, nor is it necessarily the most healthy. Our young people need social interaction to learn valuable life lesson about fairness, sharing, and teamwork. Fortunately, our youth population is showing strong resistance to the virus.

Online Learning
Some families may not be comfortable sending their students to school because of a specific risk to the student or another family member. In those cases, we will provide all the tools necessary to continue the student's education online, including a computer and online connection. Families will have the option of a self-guided curriculum, allowing the student to work at their own pace with the assistance of a mentor teacher; or they can sign up for a more guided online experience, with daily check-ins and interaction with a classroom teacher.

Blended Learning
In some cases, a family may decide that they want their student to work from home, but also have the option to come to school-based tutoring and lab work. They will be assigned classroom work and/or an online program to help them progress. We will have designated times for in-person teaching, or you can call and schedule a learning session. Once again, we will provide a computer and internet connection if needed.

We are anxious to get on the field, on the court, and in the weight room as soon as possible. The state is opening up these opportunities in phases and we will follow the guidelines provided. Our coaches and trainers will receive additional support through the MHSAA to help protect our student-athletes. Please call the office at Hamady Middle/High for more information on the summer workout schedule. The office schedule is Monday through Thursday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM and the number is 810-591-0890.

Summer School
Unfortunately, all of our summer school classes will be online this year, but we increased our staffing to better accommodate your needs. Call your school office for more information on summer programs.

Our families are telling us that they are anxious and excited to get their students back into a more normal routine. Many of our families have other obligations such as work, childcare, and supporting other family members. They need a safe and supportive environment to send their children to each day. The staff at Westwood Heights is just as anxious to see our students and families and feed on their energy. We are completing many projects to upgrade our facilities and make them safer and more energy efficient. While the state is making dire projections regarding budget cuts, we are in a financial position to weather this storm and continue to be the fastest growing school district in Genesee County.

We will have more information for you as it becomes available. This has been an extraordinary time for our community, but I am always amazed at the strength and resilience you show in the face of such obstacles. Please stay safe and enjoy the summer.
